CMN.ATO.AS.EM023: You must select a reason for the variation at T4

This error appears when a PAYG instalment variation has been entered on a BAS or IAS but no reason for the variation has been selected at T4.

Cause

An amount has been entered at a PAYG variation label, but T4 is blank. This includes a 0 amount. Variation labels include:

• Option 1: the estimated tax and varied amount labels (T8 and T9).
• Option 2: the new varied rate (T3).

On the Activity Statements screen, the same rule can also stop the form from saving, so the Lodging Party Signature Date won't save and Validate isn't available.

Solution

1. From the Main Toolbar, select Compliance > Activity Statements, then open the form.
2. Go to the PAYG income tax instalment part of the form.
3. If you're varying the instalment, select the reason for the variation at T4.
4. If you aren't varying the instalment, delete the amount (including any 0) from the variation label so it's blank.
5. Enter the Lodging Party Signature Date, save the form, then select Validate.
