Overview
When you code the same transaction description to the same account several times, Smart Matching has the ability to turn that habit into a matching rule. The rule then matches those transactions for you, both the ones waiting in Smart Matching now and new ones that come through later.
Enable the Match + Rule functionality by selecting the toggle at the top of the Smart matching Screen:
How the "Coded this way" label appears
- On the Smart Matching screen, match a transaction as usual.
Smart Matching remembers the account you chose, and other unmatched transactions with the same description now show that account in green under Predicted Chart / Rule:
- Match 2 more of these transactions to the suggested account.
The remaining transactions with that description now show a Coded this way 2x label, and their button changes to a green Match+Rule.
Hover over the label to see what it means:
Create the rule
Option 1: Match+Rule
Click Match+Rule on any of the transactions. The rule is created straight away, using the transaction description and the suggested account, and all matching transactions are matched.
The same action is also available from the dropdown next to the button as Match & Create Rule.
If you only want to match the one transaction without creating a rule, choose Match Transaction instead.
Option 2: Review the rule first
Click the Coded this way label to open the Suggest Rule window. It is filled in for you:
- Conditions: Description equals the transaction description.
- Account: the suggested account at 100%.
- Matched: the unmatched transactions the rule will match now.
- Rule Name: based on the account.
You can change any of these before saving, for example add a condition, split the allocation across accounts, tick Apply to all Bank Accounts, or tick Review before apply:
- The Matched list updates as you make changes:
- When you're happy, click Create Rule & Match Transactions:
For more on rule conditions and allocations, see the Custom Rule section of Smart Matching.
Show or hide the Match+Rule button
The Match + Rule toggle at the top of the Smart Matching screen controls whether the Match+Rule button is offered on labelled transactions:
- Toggle on: transactions with a Coded this way label show the green Match+Rule button under the Action column, so you can create the rule and match in one click.
-
Toggle off: the Match+Rule button is hidden. Those transactions show the standard Match button instead (or an orange Review button where the account needs more details).
The Coded this way label still appears, meaning you can still create the rule as shown in Option 2 above by clicking the label.
The toggle only changes which button is shown; it does not affect transactions that never had a Coded this way label.
After the rule is created
Two confirmations are shown, Rule promoted successfully. and x transactions have been matched., and the matched transactions are removed from Smart Matching.
From now on, new transactions that meet the rule are matched automatically. The rule appears on the Matching Rules screen, where you can edit it, turn it off or delete it. See Matching Rules Screen for details.
Things to know
- Accounts that need more details (for example, investments that need units, or member accounts) don't show the Coded this way label. These transactions keep the orange Review button so you can add the extra details. See Smart Matching.
- Bank account: by default, the rule only applies to the bank account the transactions came from. To use it for all bank accounts, choose Option 2 and tick Apply to all Bank Accounts.
- Don't want a description remembered? Tick Leave It Uncategorized when matching a once-off transaction, and Smart Matching won't suggest that account for the description in future.
